j: When we made the video for the launch of A Human Thing, we started with a file full of images (144 photographs/video clips) that I’d taken over weeks of preparation. I’d labeled each image, matching it up with words from the love manifesto. In the final cut, some footage didn’t make it… I had more images than Juliana Finch had music. I was sad this one got cut, so I’m sharing with you. It was labeled “BEAUTY.”
jb: Today was a total treat… a rare lazy (and rainy – so no guilt about staying indoors) Sunday. Fed my soul in the morning, followed by a quick trip to the farmers’ market, a visit with my niece (who I miss and don’t get to see enough), making cookies with her and my son and then… I introduced my son to football. Seriously. Today, we watched his first game! I explained it all, just like my dad did for me when I was little. Of course, I taught him the all important “Let’s go Niners!” cheer (and then that it could be reused to cheer for just about anything. “Let’s go dinner, let’s go!”). He was a total trooper. But what I liked most, was remembering that the best part of football, to me, has always been hanging out with someone you love.
Awww. See, I didn’t know you EVER watched football. And yay that hanging out is the best part because that makes a sad outcome like yesterday’s not quite so sad. I watched too, of course, and then after the loss, when I was feeling yucky the way fans do, two people who I’m pretty sure like me took the time to write shitty notes about how much they hate the Niners. And here’s the thing. I am The. Nicest. Fan. I would never kick someone who’s down, never gloat to a friend who liked the other team, and, in fact, have bordered on apologetic when we win. I know it shouldn’t matter, and I get that being a fan seems to mean everyone’s allowed to be a douche bag to everyone else, but… I guess I’m not sure why,.
Thanks for letting me say that here, ss. Couldn’t figure out where else to say it. xo
You can say anything to me, ss. Here, there or anywhere. 🙂
Yep! I used to watch football with my Dad a lot; we were Raiders fans back then. (Before they moved to LA — he didn’t forgive them for that and switched to the Niners.) On days when I couldn’t watch the game (homework, soccer, etc) I loved listening to him watch (ie — yell/cheer at the TV). It was so relaxing, sometimes I would fall asleep!
Even though I like football (and hockey even more) I just don’t make it a point to watch the games on TV; I’m just not much of a TV person and all those commercials and announcers make me nuts. (But DVR is the best invention ever! Commercial and announcer-free sports. Whoo-hoo!) But I’ve always loved watching the games socially — preferably live, or with friends, but a bar is okay, too. I even went to a bar by myself to watch the Raiders the last time they were in the Superbowl. (The Raiders will always be my sentimental favorites…)
I don’t get why fans have to be douche bags, especially to friends. Both teams played great yesterday. Know what my favorite part was (and always is)? When the cameras capture that moment of pure joy on the players face at the precise moment when they realized they WON and then they literally jump for joy like little kids. I LOVE that! I’m so happy for them!! (Yeah, I’m a total mush-ball. I have to have tissues nearby when I watch the Olympics — which is my favorite sport of all.)
Maybe that’s the benefit of being a sentimental sports fan– I just like a good game. 🙂
It’s not sentimental (unless you want it to be) – it’s just good sportsmanship. Both of you, good sports. Once upon a time, that meant something. Now, apparently, for many fans, winning is more important than class or integrity. You both get major bonus points for being classy about your sports fandom.
And double extra-special points for those of you that love hockey most.. Just sayin’.
Thanks, Michael. I’ll give jb the super extra special points. She deserves them for more than just that reason. And, jb, I love that instant too. Even last night when, unfortunately, it wasn’t a guy on my team wearing the gleeful expression.
Whoo-hoo! I get double extra-special points! Thanks, Michael! 🙂
Yes, I’ve been shocked at the level of poor-sportsmanship regarding this game. I heard there were even death threats on the players – true? That’s just ridiculous. It’s a game, people. G-A-M-E. GAME. Look it up. Sadly, the polarization that has taken over other areas (ie, politics, religions, school boards… just sayin) is in sports, too. People seem to have forgotten how to listen, understand and compromise with integrity. Sigh…
Luckily, j is going fix all that with her amazing love project. (Thank you, j!)
In the meantime, I wish we could all watch a game together!
What a beautiful picture you captured! I love the little flowers peeking through the “weeds” (although, I personally like those fuzzy weeds, too.) It’s like wild beauty!
It was wild. Out on a Humboldt swamp. 🙂
