jb: Our home is undergoing a transfer of power. For the past 5 years, trains, especially Thomas-the-train and all things Sodor, have reigned supreme. There were no rivals. There were toys and then there were Thomas-the-train toys. Period. While I will always have fond memories of our days (and weeks and months and years) with Thomas, and even though I’ve always made a point not to wish any of my child’s phases away (partly because the next phase could be worse), I must admit that I welcome the change in toy options.
Slowly, Legos have started creeping in and I love all the fascinating creations – some of which have even been allowed to take over portions of the beloved train table. But most recently, this guy (affectionately known as “Hawk Dude” because he has a hawk mask, but mostly because I can’t remember his real name) has started making appearances.
And I LOVE Hawk Dude! He pops up in the most random places, hanging from the closet doorknob, the microwave, the top of the lampshade, even the toilet (lid closed, thankfully!) and every time he has this awesome attitude pose that just screams “I CONQUERED THIS!” — which never fails to crack me up.
No doubt Hawk Dude will find his way to the train table eventually and face-off with Thomas. But hopefully Hawk Dude will show due respect to the first king of the toys, and remember that his reign won’t last forever either.
j: I love when a day just suddenly decides to take my breath away.
I LOVE Hawk Dude! Remember when Lego’s were all square? Our Hawk Dudes were only this cool in our heads.
Your post is especially poignant to me because my boys are so much older than yours and so this not only brings back memories but also reminds me to notice all the coolness that surrounds me now in my (incredibly) full house. Thank you for that.
I’m going to begin practicing my “I conquered this pose” immediately.
Ha! I knew you would love Hawk Dude, too! isn’t he awesome? Oh, but he’s not a Lego (but I can see why you’d think so, bad segue on may part). He’s a “Hero Factory” guy — which is some offshoot of Bionicle, I believe. You’ll be happy to know that Lego’s are still square, but now they include crazy instructions books with 27 hundred steps to build something awesome (like a Star Wars land speeder — whoo-hoo!) that you’re afraid to play with because you worked really hard building it and it might break.(Well, I am anyway. My son is awesome about following the directions to create it, then modifying the bejeebers out of it and playing with it anyway. Yay! He teaches me something wonderful every day. :-D)
Yep, find the good in your “incredibly full house” while it lasts! (Which I’m sure you will; you’re good at finding the good in everything.) Whenever I think of that saying “This too will pass” I remind myself that, unfortunately, it applies to the good stuff, too.
Oh hey, guess what I learned while out Christmas shopping today? You were right – Hawk Dude is made by Lego. Huh? He doesn’t look Legoish. He’s the coolest Lego evah!
Wow! Look at that beautiful place! I want to go on walks with you — the view from my treadmill in the garage is awful. (Clarification: I always want to join you for a walk — but now I want to enjoy the scenery and take pictures with you, too.) Thanks for sharing!
I was riding when I saw this and stopped to get the shot, but riding or walking with my best friend, it all works.
I love how you swept the leaves just so to balance the photo, j. That’s dedication. Must have taken you hours! You should have done an “I conquered this” pose in front of all of those leaves. 😉
When I was a kid, I loved the Micronaut action figures (yes, think mid-70’s, I don’t mind). They were tiny – like maybe three inches tall – yet fully poseable. It meant I could take legions in my pockets to have them scale cliffs and fall down badger holes. You had to squint a bit, but they were also known to strike the odd “I conquered this” pose, usually with a hubristic back turned to the badger hole and just before said badger ate ’em. Cocky little guys…
Okay, I LOVE picturing you as a little dude playing with your little dudes. And clearly, cliff-scaling was part of your molecular makeup.
And as for the sweeping, you know. Anything for you guys.
Micronauts! I didn’t have them (I was a Hot Wheels girl) but I remember the commercials during Saturday cartoons and I’m sure some of the neighbor boys had them. Oh yeah, Saturdays in the mid-70’s, those were the days. 🙂
