j: I found this picture on the camera while I was watching coverage of Hurricane Irene and worrying about all my friends that live in her path. I was pretty nervous, doing busy work, resisting the temptation to text “Are you okay now?” every few minutes. Born and raised in the Bay Area, I have no experience with terrifying weather; seems like the scariness of earthquakes times about a million.
As soon as I saw this picture (which Chad took, not me), I felt inexplicably reassured, like everyone would be okay. My reaction made me curious, so I looked up the mythology and found out that the “ladybug showing up in one’s life foretells a time of luck and protection.”
Perfect.
It’s Sunday afternoon as I write this, and everyone seems to be okay. There are less magical explanations for that of course. The Weather Channel has been full of the science of hurricanes and tropical storms, and how one can change into the other, and how it doesn’t take a miracle to dodge a bullet. It’s fascinating. I’m totally into the science of it all, even as I feel a little mushy with new-found ladybug love.
jb: This fountain has the power to stop time for me. I am so grateful.
You could meditate with it. Love the water drops in that shot. I can never get them right. Should we go over shutter speed and what not, ONE MORE TIME? š
I do, meditate with it. Or at least I’m learning to. It’s in the courtyard at church and I can see it through the window; sometimes I look there during meditation – it helps quiet my monkey brain. And afterwards, I drink my church-coffee-in-a-styrofoam cup (which makes me ridiculously happy! <3) while sitting on the bench near the fountain and listen to my son tell me about what he learned. Or in this case, how happy he is that someone at church made gluten free chocolate chip cookies. š
I will review shutter speed and any what-nots you like any time! The more I teach the more I learn. š The super short version: Fast shutter speed stops motion, slow shutter speed blurs motion. (Flash will also stop motion, not to make it confusing…) Another way to think of it… if the shutter speed is slow, it means the lens is open longer — more time for things to move across the "film" and be blurry.
Wow! Do they always make gluten free snacks? (So inclusive!)
And, fast shudder speed. Gotcha. Iām going to go tell my camera I want that and see what happens.
Be sure to whisper that in it’s ear, so you know it’s listening… š
And (I hit reply to soon…) they don’t always have gluten free snacks, people volunteer to make snacks — so it’s whatever they make. (Yep, I’ll be volunteering & making GF snacks soon, too.) But they are very inclusive in every way!
Wow! Another reason to love ladybugs! I’d heard they were good luck, but didn’t know they were protection, too. (Although they do protect my artichoke plant from aphids.) Next time I have to walk down a dark alley, I’m bringing a lady bug for back-up!
Yikes! I forgot to say awesome lady bug picture! I especially like the composition-how the lines of the house/background & the branches all draw your eye in to the lady bug. Awesome!
I’ll pass your compliment along. (Did you notice how careful I was to give credit where it’s due? Linking with love, baby. Or something like that.)
You are always wonderful and careful about giving credit to others. š
